People In Your Community Who Know and Support Sherlett

Robert Skeels: Public Education Activist, Researcher and Writer

Jehangir Dastur and I had very successful precinct walking for Sherlett Hendy Newbill today. In addition to 9 commits on our walking list, we got 4 more voters, including a woman who had us help her pre-mark her sample ballot. We also had a gentlemen tell us that he's an acquaintance with the retired administrator, but was so impressed with our candidate that he and his wife would vote for her. We had a great deal of success in telling people that she attended Dorsey, went to college, and came back to her old neighborhood to teach and coach. We'd then say "we need school board members like that," and people agreed. There's only a few weeks left. I hope people give their time, money, and support to the mother, teacher, coach!

Ulis Williams: President of Compton Community College and Olympic Athlete

Williams worked at Compton Community College for nearly three decades, serving in numerous positions of increasing responsibility before assuming the post of Superintendent and President in 1996.

Before his educational career, Williams was an American athlete, graduating from Compton High School as Track and Field News High School Athlete of the Year. He went on to win two NCAA Championships at Arizona State University, and ultimately helped set a new world record at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan where his team won a gold medal in the 4 x 400 meter relay.

Danielle Lafayette: CBO Case Manager and Former Student

I am a Class of 2002 graduate of Dorsey High School and was a student in Coach Newbill's P.E. class. Coach Newbill was a great role model for us at all times, always engaging us anyway she could. Her class paved the way for my future as a track and field athlete, I am now a graduate of California State University, Dominguez Hills after receiving a full Track scholarship. Having a teacher that has grown up in our community means she knows the needs of the community. Coach Newbill knows exactly what our school system is lacking. As a teacher, she made sure to encourage and guide us in every way possible. I support Coach Newbill for LAUSD School Board because she is exactly what we need to propel our students to reach their greatest academic excellence.

Elizabeth Silva: Student at Santa Monica College

What I love about Sherlett is her genuine love for people. I love that Sherlett is very relatable, which has allowed me to open up my life to her on several occasions. She has always opened up her schedule for me whenever I needed her. Sherlett has also provided great support in helping to rebuild a broken relationship that I had with my sister. I support Sherlett in her goals because I know that she is there to make a difference for the sake of the people and the community.

Gwen Driscoll: Communications Professional

I've known Sherlett as a devoted mom to her son and as a strong, intelligent, no-nonsense and professional woman of integrity. I believe she truly cares about our schools and the hard issues we face. She brings new ideas and a fresh face yet at the same time is a teaching veteran who has a detailed understanding of the very complex issues before us, whether they be iPads in schools or the charter model. Best of all, she brings a warm smile, a diplomat's light touch and a coach's ability to get her 'players' to work as a team, which are important qualities for anyone trying to get things done effectively.

Oscar Surles: LAPD Police Officer

For the many years that I have known Sherlett, it seems her top priority has always been our children. This position is a part of her calling. In supporting her, I pledge my support to the good of all children, I will surely be spreading her message. No man can close the doors that God opens!

She helps them dream and see that they can be whoever they want to be, as long as they put in all the hard work. Sherlett is dependable, resourceful and gives 110% to whatever she goes after. As a School Psychologist working in the very busy world of Support Services in LAUSD, I appreciate Sherlett's unequivocal stand against cuts to these services for students who need them. As an enthusiastic supporter and friend, I know that Sherlett is the best candidate for LA Board of Education. She is an outstanding teacher and coach at Dorsey High School. She lived and works in her community. She is relatable as a wife, mother and public education activist. These are all qualities that are needed on the Board. Current Board members claim to represent their constituents; Sherlett is the only candidate who truly fits the bill. Vote for Sherlett, she will shine for you!
